Avelin is the confirmed protagonist of Grim Trials, while Kai is a publicly revealed senior Reaper trainee introduced in the newer demo. The Academy is also populated by mentors and other dead denizens whose quests and relationships can unlock knowledge and support, but most of their names and exact roles have not been published yet.
Confirmed Grim Trials characters
Avelin is a young woman who dies prematurely and is recruited as one of Death’s Reapers. Her larger goal is to endure the trials, become a full-fledged Reaper, and find a way to see her still-living love again. This puts her personal story directly inside the roguelite loop rather than treating the combat as disconnected runs.
Kai was introduced publicly with the newer 2026 demo. Coverage based on the demo announcement describes him as a fellow Cocoon and senior Grim Reaper trainee who pushes Avelin to become stronger. Interacting with him also opens the endless Training Ground used for testing builds.
Mentors and Academy denizens
Official store descriptions say the Academy contains mentors who help train and arm Reapers. Players can take quests, build relationships, learn stories of the dead, and unlock advice, knowledge, and support from peers. The release-date trailer also shows separate weapon, tailor, and potion rooms with mentors tied to crafting.

After the full release, character pages should focus on game-specific information: where a character appears, which quests they give, what support or recipes they unlock, relationship requirements, and story consequences. General speculation or invented biographies will not be used to fill gaps.
