Grim Trials is built around a customizable scythe-and-crossbow pairing. The scythe covers close-range pressure, the crossbow adds ranged control and damage uptime, and the official game description says the combat system rewards using both weapons together rather than treating one as optional.

Confirmed weapon types
Scythes
Scythes are the close-range half of Avelin’s combat kit. The official Steam page describes “customizable scythes” and repeatedly frames the scythe as a weapon you are expected to master alongside the crossbow. For SEO and wiki structure, scythes deserve their own hub once the full item list can be verified.
Crossbows
Crossbows provide the ranged half of the pairing. Their strategic value is not simply “attack from far away”; the stronger interpretation of the official combat description is that they let you keep pressure on enemies while repositioning, then return to scythe range when the arena is safe enough.
How the dual-weapon system should shape your play
Grim Trials’ store description says the combat system rewards clever use of dual-wielded weapons to maximize damage. That implies the basic weapon question is not only “Which scythe is strongest?” but also “Which scythe and crossbow combination supports the same plan?”
- Use ranged pressure during unsafe melee windows. If traps, projectiles, or boss patterns make close-range attacks risky, the crossbow can preserve momentum.
- Return to melee deliberately. Do not stay at range by habit if your scythe, gear, Skill Tree or Blessings reward close-range actions.
- Evaluate pairs, not isolated items. A weapon that looks average alone may be valuable if its effect fills a weakness in the other half of the loadout.
Weapons and crafting
Weapons are part of Grim Trials’ crafting economy. Materials gathered in battle can be turned into more powerful weapons, armor, and consumables with help from mentors at the Academy. The demo also uses side quests to unlock recipes, showing that access to equipment can depend on progression and quests rather than random drops alone.
Until the release build is available, this site will not publish unverified recipe costs. The planned weapon database will separate how to unlock a recipe, what it costs to craft, what the item effect does, and which builds actually benefit from it.
