If you are new to Grim Trials, start with the Beginner Guide, then read Combat and Progression. Once the core loop makes sense, move into the guides that match your goal: Achievements for 100% completion, Quests and Affinity for Academy side content, Crafting Progression for equipment upgrades, Trial Ground for challenge runs, and True Ending plus the Secret Chamber guides for late-game cleanup.
Where should a new Grim Trials player start?
Grim Trials becomes much easier to understand once you stop treating each system as a separate menu. Avelin enters the Trial Grounds with crafted equipment and permanent progression, fights through randomized rooms, gains temporary Blessings during the run, then returns to the Academy with persistent progress. The Academy is where quests, mentors, Affinity, crafting and several important unlocks connect back into the next attempt.
The Beginner Guide is the best first stop because it explains that loop without assuming you already know the game’s terminology. After that, the Combat Guide helps with movement, melee/ranged switching and arena fundamentals, while the Progression Guide explains what remains valuable between failed runs and how to decide what to improve next.

Combat and the seven Sinful Soul bosses
The released game is built around fast melee/ranged combat in hex-grid arenas. Official descriptions emphasize swapping between melee attacks and the off-hand crossbow, while post-launch patches have already adjusted movement, melee telegraphing and ranged balance. This is why combat advice should always be read with a version in mind rather than copied from an old demo clip.
When a specific boss is stopping your run, go to the Bosses Hub. The seven achievement-confirmed Sinful Souls are Acedia, Avaritia, Gula, Ira, Luxuria, Invidia and Superbia. Their corresponding Virtue achievements provide a reliable official roster even where detailed public mechanics are limited. The boss pages deliberately avoid invented phase names, exact damage values or guaranteed drops when those details cannot be verified from the current build.
The August 29 update is especially relevant to boss advice. It added a clearer boss-room visual cue, reduced obstacles that could interrupt dashes, improved melee attack telegraph behavior and rebalanced Acedia’s summoned enemies. If a launch-week guide describes getting stuck on arena geometry or attacks tracking through a dodge, check whether the footage predates that update.
Progression, Soul Runes and the Skill Tree
Persistent progression is what turns repeated Trial Ground attempts into forward movement. The official game description says experience and materials remain with Avelin, and the current build connects equipment with an expansive Skill Tree. For the skill-specific layer, use the Skills Hub, Skill Tree Guide and Soul Runes Guide.
Soul Runes are particularly patch-sensitive because v1.0.20260824 fixed two important problems: late-game Soul Runes could stop being obtainable for some players, and Runes removed from the Skill Tree could disappear instead of being refunded. The intended current behavior is therefore different from those bug reports. The same update also clarified that Gear Enchantment is accessed through Skill Tree progression, which is covered in the Gear Enchantment Guide.
Crafting, weapons and equipment progression
Crafting is not optional flavor if you want a smooth progression route. Grim Trials lets Avelin craft weapons, armor and consumables with Academy mentors, and several achievements overlap with crafting. Fashionista asks you to craft all gear, Weapon Connoisseur asks you to craft all weapons, Mentor Makeover is tied to crafting a new set for John with Milyun, and In Their Final Forms requires completing a Trial Ground run with Level 3 Mastercrafted Weapon and Gear.
Use the Crafting Progression Guide when you need the systems connected in one route. The Recipes Guide focuses on recipe progression without inventing unsupported material costs, while the Weapons Hub separates the confirmed weapon classes—scythe, axe, hammer and crossbow—from item-level details that still need release-build verification.
Academy quests and Affinity
The Academy is both a story hub and a progression hub. Official descriptions say players can learn from mentors, take on quests, build relationships and unlock support from other characters. In practice, post-launch guides also show that side quests intersect with recipes, Soul Runes, secrets and completion goals.
The Quests Guide organizes the side-content achievements Courier Girl, We Were Enemies for A Day, Snake Charmer, Girls’ Night Out and Mentor Makeover. The Affinity Guide tracks the six maximum-Affinity achievements tied to Pytra, Milyun, Ivanya, Iskra, Kai, and Breone & Nameles.
Because exact quest translations can vary by language, these guides anchor routes to achievement requirements, characters, boss milestones and clearly identified objectives instead of pretending one localized quest name is universal. That approach is especially useful on a site that supports multiple languages.
How to approach the 29 achievements
Steam currently exposes 29 achievements. The easiest way to plan them is by system rather than by rarity. Boss achievements mostly progress with the main Trials. Affinity and side-quest achievements reward returning to the Academy and completing character content. Crafting achievements overlap with recipe and equipment progression. Omnitheism pushes you to experience the Gods of Death Blessings. Secret and ending achievements require more deliberate cleanup.
The Achievements Guide provides the full category roadmap. It is also the safest place to verify whether an objective is official achievement text or a route reconstructed from player testing. For example, the achievement End of All Cycle officially confirms a True Ending exists, but the exact route used to reach it is not fully described by the platform achievement text. That distinction is preserved in the True Ending Guide.
Trial Ground challenges versus the Training Ground
Do not confuse the Trial Ground with Kai’s Training Ground. Trial Ground runs are the real progression/challenge content referenced by achievements. The Trial Ground Guide covers The Untouchable, which requires a run without taking damage, and In Their Final Forms, which requires a completed run using Level 3 Mastercrafted Weapon and Gear.
Kai’s Training Ground is a practice-oriented activity. Use the Training Ground Hub when you want to test weapon timing, combos or a changed Skill Tree setup without confusing that practice space with achievement-related Trial Ground requirements.
Secrets, Grim Reaper Chests and the True Ending
The late-game cleanup cluster links several guides together. Tomb Raider officially requires finding and entering the Secret Chamber. Current player-tested routing places its entrance in the Academy basement and connects access to the Camouflage Cloak. Buried Knowledge officially requires opening the first Grim Reaper Chest, while the best current walkthrough links that chest to Breone and Nameles side content.
Start with the Secret Chamber Guide, continue to the Grim Reaper Chests Guide, and use the True Ending Guide before committing to final-story cleanup. These pages label player-tested requirements clearly so that an achievement title is never stretched into a fabricated official quest condition.
Which patch notes matter most to current guides?
Two post-launch updates shape most current advice. v1.0.20260824 fixed Soul Rune acquisition and refunds, repaired a Crafting failure, clarified Gear Enchantment access, improved recipe navigation, adjusted Gear buffs and rebalanced ranged combinations, ranged cooldowns and the Anubis Blessing. v1.0.20260829 then focused on boss-room cues, dash-stopping obstacles, melee telegraphing and Acedia’s summoned enemies.
The August 29 notes also say the developers are exploring larger roguelite improvements, including an Axe revamp and expanded Blessing content/synergies. Those are future-facing design directions, not shipped mechanics. Current guides therefore do not write the proposed Axe revamp or Blessing expansion as though players already have them.
