Acedia is the best-documented early boss in Grim Trials and the target of the Virtue of Diligence achievement. The safest current-version plan is to control the arena before chasing damage: respect the oval-shaped Eye Hazards, clear or contain summoned enemies before they steal your movement space, use the boss's recovery windows for melee damage, and fall back to crossbow pressure whenever the floor becomes crowded. Acedia was adjusted during the Demo and then rebalanced again after release, so old footage can show the right ideas while still reflecting outdated tuning.

Who is Acedia in Grim Trials?
Acedia is one of the seven Sinful Soul bosses that Avelin must overcome during her Purification. The released Steam achievement list confirms the boss directly: defeating Acedia awards Virtue of Diligence. That achievement is useful because it removes the uncertainty that surrounded pre-release boss naming and makes Acedia a safe target for a dedicated guide rather than a speculative Demo page.
Acedia also matters from a guide-writing perspective because the developers published unusually specific balance notes for the encounter. Most Grim Trials bosses do not yet have the same amount of public mechanical documentation. For Acedia, however, we can safely discuss summoned enemies, Eye Hazards, a second phase, visual cues and attack windows without inventing hidden values or frame data.
How the Eye Hazard works
The official June Demo update describes the Eye Hazard as oval-shaped ground damage created by the boss. The same update says the number of Eye Hazards in the second phase was reduced and that a visual cue was added to the attack. Those two details tell you how to approach the mechanic even without publishing exact damage numbers: the floor warning is information, not decoration, and phase two can create enough overlapping area denial that movement planning becomes more important than squeezing in one additional attack.
When an Eye Hazard cue appears, avoid treating the nearest empty tile as automatically safe. Instead, look at where you want to stand after the dodge. A move that escapes one oval but leaves you trapped beside a summon or at the edge of another hazard can still turn into a bad exchange. In a hex-grid arena, preserving a route back toward open space is often more valuable than moving the minimum possible distance.
Managing Acedia's summoned enemies
Summoned enemies are the other officially confirmed pressure point in the encounter. During the Demo period, the developers added a maximum limit on spawned minions. After launch, version v1.0.20260829 explicitly rebalanced Acedia's summoned enemies again. The current guide therefore avoids quoting old spawn counts, health values or kill timings, because those are exactly the kinds of details that can become wrong after a rebalance.
The durable strategy is target priority. If summons begin reducing the amount of safe floor available, deal with them before committing to a long boss combo. Acedia is easier to read when you are tracking one boss telegraph instead of a boss telegraph plus several independent enemies approaching from different directions. Clearing adds also protects your dodge lanes, which matters more in this fight than chasing short-term boss damage while the room becomes increasingly crowded.
Do not automatically abandon the boss every time a minion appears. If the summon is far away and the boss has just entered a clear recovery period, taking a short punish can still be efficient. The point is to prevent the add wave from becoming a movement problem, not to follow a rigid rule that every summon must die instantly.
Use Acedia's punish windows
One of the most useful official changes was an increase to Acedia's idle time between attacks. The developers described the goal directly: give players a larger attack window. That means the fight rewards patience more than panic. You do not need to force melee uptime through every pattern when the encounter is intentionally built around recognizable downtime.
Wait for the boss to finish an attack, confirm that the floor is not about to become unsafe, then enter with a short sequence you know you can finish. A common boss-fight mistake is choosing your longest available melee string simply because an opening exists. A shorter, reliable punish followed by a clean exit is usually better than being caught in animation commitment when the next Eye Hazard or summon pressure begins.
What changes in phase two?
The developers specifically referenced phase two when reducing the number of Eye Hazards, confirming that Acedia's fight escalates beyond its earlier state. The safe conclusion is not that a particular percentage of health triggers an exact scripted pattern; the public notes do not establish that. What they do establish is that later-fight hazard density was important enough to receive a dedicated balance change.
Enter the later portion of the fight expecting movement demands to increase. If your run allows it, preserving health and a usable ranged option for this stage is more valuable than spending every resource to accelerate phase one. Phase two is where poor arena positioning compounds quickly: an Eye Hazard can remove one route while summons occupy another, so maintaining open space before the pressure spikes gives you more answers when multiple threats overlap.
Scythe, crossbow and build priorities
Grim Trials is designed around using melee and ranged tools together. Against Acedia, that matters because the encounter naturally alternates between safe punish windows and moments when approaching the boss is inconvenient. Use your melee weapon when the boss is recovering and the floor is readable; use the crossbow when Eye Hazards, summons or spacing make a close approach unnecessarily risky.
Do not build around an old ranged exploit without checking the patch. Version v1.0.20260824 adjusted several ranged attack combinations, ranged weapon cooldowns and the Anubis Blessing. Those changes do not make ranged combat bad; they simply mean that a pre-patch setup should not be treated as a permanent best-in-slot solution. A balanced Acedia build values reliable damage, mobility and effects that remain useful even when you cannot stand next to the boss.
Your Skill Tree and Soul Rune configuration should support the same rhythm. If your preferred weapon requires deliberate spacing, choose upgrades that make that plan more consistent rather than collecting unrelated bonuses. If your build is fragile, prioritize clean clears and safe punish windows over theoretical maximum damage. Acedia is a good test of whether a build still works when the arena becomes messy.
Dodging after v1.0.20260829
The August 29 patch changed more than Acedia's summons. It also reduced Trial Ground obstacles that could interrupt dashes or leave the player stuck and adjusted melee attack telegraphing so dodges feel fairer, particularly in cases where attacks appeared to keep tracking after the player moved. These changes affect the context of modern boss play, even if they are not unique to Acedia.
Use the clearer environment to dodge with intention. A dash should move you toward a planned safe lane rather than simply away from the boss. When multiple hazards are visible, crossing the smallest immediate danger can be worse than rotating into a larger open area. If your dodge ends beside a summon, you have traded one threat for another.
A simple Acedia strategy
- Enter with a coherent build. Know which weapon is your safe damage tool and which is your punish tool.
- Observe the first patterns before overcommitting. Learn the visual rhythm instead of trying to race the boss immediately.
- Respect Eye Hazard cues. Move toward open space, not merely away from the current oval.
- Control summons before they close your escape routes. Use ranged attacks to soften or finish enemies when melee positioning is poor.
- Punish recovery windows. The boss's idle time was deliberately adjusted to provide clearer opportunities to attack.
- Expect more floor pressure later. Phase-two Eye Hazards were specifically balanced by the developers, so keep movement space available.
- Do not copy exact Demo-era counts or timings. Acedia's summoned enemies were rebalanced again in the released game.
Virtue of Diligence achievement
Beating Acedia unlocks Virtue of Diligence. Steam's global achievement page lists the requirement simply as “Beat Acedia,” and the same objective appears on Xbox and PlayStation achievement/trophy trackers. No extra challenge condition is attached to the achievement in those released lists, so the goal is straightforward: win the encounter.
Acedia video status
A search for a focused, current-version Acedia guide did not surface a sufficiently strong post-launch tutorial that was clearly better than the written official evidence available here. For that reason, this page does not embed a generic Grim Trials trailer and does not use an old Demo video simply to fill space. A boss-specific video should be added only when it clearly demonstrates the current encounter or provides a useful visual explanation of Eye Hazards, summons or phase-two positioning.
Acedia FAQ
What achievement do you get for beating Acedia?
Virtue of Diligence.
Does Acedia summon enemies?
Yes. The developers capped spawned minions during the Demo and rebalanced the summoned enemies again in v1.0.20260829.
What is the Eye Hazard?
The official June update describes it as an oval-shaped ground-damage attack from Acedia. A visual cue was added, and the number appearing in phase two was reduced during that balance pass.
Was Acedia nerfed?
The encounter has received several difficulty and readability adjustments, but “nerfed” is too broad to describe every change. The developers limited minion spawns, reduced phase-two Eye Hazards, added a hazard cue, expanded attack windows and later rebalanced summoned enemies.
Should I stay in melee range?
No. Use melee during clear punish windows and crossbow pressure when hazards or summons make a close approach unsafe. Grim Trials is built around switching between the two ranges.
