The Grim Trials Skill Tree is a pre-run progression system used to shape Avelin’s combat style before randomized Blessings begin influencing the run. The February 2026 demo update expanded the tree and added an Attack Combos branch, explicitly moving it beyond simple stat increases.

How the Skill Tree works
The official Steam page describes skills as something you invest in at the start of every run. That timing matters: the Skill Tree is your planned foundation, while randomized Blessings arrive later and force you to adapt. Equipment sits alongside both systems, creating a three-layer build structure.
Because experience and materials persist when Avelin falls, failed runs still contribute to long-term progression. The practical goal is not to create a perfect tree immediately, but to turn persistent progress into a clearer combat plan each time you return to the Trials.
What changed in the February 2026 demo update?
The developers said Skill Tree values were adjusted, existing nodes were expanded and a major new Attack Combos node was added. Their stated goal was to let the tree fine-tune Avelin’s fighting style rather than act only as a list of passive stat bonuses.
Contemporary coverage of that developer update identified six Attack Combo nodes: Charge, Aftershock, Finisher, Clash, Momentum and Shadowstep, each reported with two upgrade levels and stackable damage bonuses. Treat those details as demo-version information until the launch build is checked.
What the public tree already tells us
Public demo screenshots show multiple colored branches and dedicated combat directions, including a ranged path. Even without assuming final values, the layout makes one point clear: spreading points everywhere is not automatically the best early strategy. A focused route can reinforce the weapon behavior you actually use.
| Build goal | Skill Tree priority | Then look for... |
|---|---|---|
| Safer ranged pressure | Ranged-focused nodes and movement-friendly upgrades | Crossbow effects and Blessings that reward consistent ranged uptime |
| Aggressive melee | Attack-combo and damage nodes that fit frequent scythe engagement | Gear and Blessings that improve safe close-range pressure |
| General progression | Reliable survivability or broadly useful damage before narrow synergies | Flexible equipment while you learn boss and enemy patterns |
How to think about Attack Combos
Attack Combos are especially important because they suggest the Skill Tree can modify how you sequence attacks, not just how large a number becomes. Until every node is documented in the final build, the best approach is to test one branch at a time and record whether it changes your real combat decisions.
- Does the node encourage a sequence you already use naturally?
- Does it improve both normal rooms and boss encounters, or only one?
- Does the effect still matter when your preferred Blessings do not appear?
- Does the node work with both halves of your weapon pairing, or lock you into a narrow plan?
Skill Tree, gear and Blessings
The official description explicitly links crafted equipment, Skill Tree investment and randomized Blessings into one build system. A sensible order is: bring gear with a clear purpose, spend early skill investment to reinforce that purpose, then use Blessings to multiply the same strengths or patch an obvious weakness.
What we will test at launch
After August 20, the Skill Tree guide should be rebuilt around verified node names, costs, prerequisites and exact effects. The highest-value follow-up pages will likely be a complete node database, recommended early-game priorities, weapon-specific routes and patch-aware builds.
