Grim Trials Progression Guide

Grim Trials progression guide explaining retained experience and materials, crafting, Skill Tree choices, Blessings and between-run priorities.

Grim Trials progression mixes persistent resources with run-specific choices. Experience and materials survive death, crafted equipment carries into future attempts, Skill Tree choices shape the start of a run, and randomized Blessings create temporary synergies during the run.

Key distinction: not every power increase is permanent. Treat materials, crafting and retained experience as long-term progress, while Blessings are part of the run-to-run variation.

The Skill Tree is one layer of progression; it works alongside crafted gear and mid-run Blessings.

What stays after death?

Official store text explicitly says the experience and materials earned by Avelin stay with her after she falls. This is the core roguelite safety net: a failed boss attempt can still contribute to future strength.

Crafting as permanent preparation

Materials gathered from battle are used with mentors to create weapons, armor and consumables. Demo coverage and the existing crafting pages also show that recipe access can be expanded through quests, so progression is partly about unlocking what can be crafted and partly about paying the material cost.

Skill Tree progression

The game describes an expansive Skill Tree used at the start of every run. The February demo update expanded that system with attack-combo nodes such as Charge, Aftershock, Finisher, Clash, Momentum and Shadowstep. These names are demo-era data and should be rechecked at launch.

Blessings and temporary power

Blessings are randomized mid-run choices. Rather than viewing them as permanent unlocks, use them to specialize the current attempt around your equipment and selected skills. Appearance rates have already been rebalanced during the demo period, which is another reason to avoid publishing fixed “best” odds before launch.

Efficient progression loop

  1. Collect materials even on imperfect runs.
  2. Return to the Academy and check quests or new dialogue.
  3. Craft a targeted upgrade instead of spending randomly.
  4. Plan the next Skill Tree direction.
  5. Use the Training Ground when testing unfamiliar gear or combos.

Progression FAQ

Do you lose everything when you die?

No. Experience and materials earned during a run persist according to the official store description. The run itself ends, while those long-term resources continue to support future attempts.

Are Blessings permanent?

They are described as randomized upgrades obtained mid-run, so they belong to the changing run layer rather than the persistent resource layer.

What should you upgrade first?

There is not enough final-build evidence for a universal first-upgrade answer. Before launch, prioritize upgrades that solve a clear problem in your own runs rather than following a tier list based on obsolete demo balance.
