Grim Trials has a Kai-linked practice area that was publicly introduced as an endless Training Ground during the final demo period and is described as a Combat Arena in current player-tested quest documentation. Its purpose is to practice combat and complete Kai-related objectives. It should not be confused with the Trial Ground, the main run structure referenced by achievements such as The Untouchable and In Their Final Forms.

What is the Grim Trials Training Ground?
Before release, coverage of the final Grim Trials demo introduced Kai as a fellow Cocoon and senior Grim Reaper trainee. That coverage said players could access an endless Training Ground through Kai to test builds, experiment with weapons and abilities, and practice combat before taking on the game's real challenges.
That description is useful because it establishes the feature's intended role: controlled combat practice rather than story progression by itself. However, the terminology becomes less simple after launch. A current post-launch trophy guide describes a Combat Arena beside Kai and gives release-build quest steps that take place there. The guide says one early Kai side quest asks the player to survive waves in the arena, and another later task also sends the player back to the same area for a combat objective.
Because the post-launch guide is third-party rather than an official English UI capture, we do not use its translated quest names as guaranteed canonical wording. What is more important is the system relationship: Kai is tied to a repeatable combat-practice area in both the final-demo description and release-build player documentation.
How is Kai connected to the practice area?
Kai is not only a practice-menu character. The released achievement list includes From Foe To Fellow, awarded for reaching maximum Affinity Points with Kai. Another official achievement, We Were Enemies for A Day, requires the player to spar with the fellow apprentice. Those achievements confirm that Kai has a broader progression and relationship role in the final game.
Post-launch quest documentation adds more detail. It reports that an early Kai side quest becomes available after some Academy progression and leads into the Combat Arena beside him. The route described by that guide involves surviving multiple waves. Later, after further story progress, Kai can be involved in a friendly spar and additional side-content objectives.
Those exact quest steps are useful player-tested evidence, but they should not be mixed with the simpler official achievement wording. If your localized game uses different quest names, follow Kai's quest marker and the objective text shown in your current build rather than expecting an English fan translation to match word for word.
For the character relationship and achievement route, see the dedicated Kai Guide.
Training Ground / Combat Arena vs Trial Ground
This is the most important distinction on the page. Trial Ground is not just another spelling of Training Ground. The released achievement list explicitly uses Trial Ground for challenge-run objectives.
| Term | What the evidence refers to | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Training Ground | Final-demo description of Kai's endless practice feature | Testing builds, weapons, abilities and combat |
| Combat Arena | Post-launch player-tested name/translation for the Kai-adjacent combat area | Kai side quests and repeatable combat objectives |
| Trial Ground | Main run/challenge structure explicitly named by released achievements | Real progression runs, rooms, bosses and completion challenges |
The achievement The Untouchable requires completing a Trial Ground run without taking damage. In Their Final Forms requires completing a Trial Ground run with Level 3 Mastercrafted Weapon and Gear. Those conditions belong to the Trial Ground system, not to a practice session beside Kai.
Practice can prepare you for those achievements, but it does not satisfy them merely because the names sound similar. If you are achievement hunting, use the Trial Ground Guide for the actual challenge structure.
What should you test in Kai's practice area?
The best use of a repeatable combat space is not simply “deal as much damage as possible.” Grim Trials combines melee timing, ranged pressure, equipment, Skill Tree choices, Soul Runes and later run-specific Blessings. A controlled arena is useful when you isolate one part of that stack.
1. Weapon rhythm
Practice the commitment and recovery of your current melee option before taking it into a difficult Trial Ground room. Scythes, axes and hammers should not be treated as interchangeable just because all three occupy melee space. The useful question is whether you can complete the attacks you actually intend to use without repeatedly getting caught during recovery or overcommitting.
2. Crossbow timing
Use practice to learn how ranged attacks fit around movement and melee. The August 24 balance update changed ranged combinations and cooldowns, so an old pre-patch combo video may not reflect the current timing. Practice against your installed build rather than memorizing a launch-week sequence.
3. Active Skill Tree abilities
If a newly slotted Soul Rune gives access to an active combo or changes a part of your combat flow, repeat the input until it becomes reliable. The point is not to infer undocumented damage numbers; it is to understand whether the ability fits naturally into how you already move and attack.
4. Defensive habits
Dodging, spacing and recognizing attack telegraphs matter as much as raw damage. The v1.0.20260829 patch adjusted melee telegraphing and tracking behavior, so practicing defensive timing on the current version is more useful than copying an older clip frame for frame.
A practical Training Ground testing method
- Start with a baseline. Use the setup you already understand and perform the same short sequence several times.
- Change one variable. Swap one weapon, Soul Rune, Skill Tree option or gear choice rather than replacing the entire build at once.
- Repeat the same situation. One lucky critical interaction or clean wave is not enough to judge consistency.
- Watch safety as well as damage. A slightly slower setup may be better if it leaves more room to dodge and reposition.
- Take the result into a Trial Ground. Controlled practice cannot reproduce every room layout, randomized Blessing offer, boss pattern or run resource decision.
This process gives the arena a clear purpose: it helps answer “does this change improve the part of my build I care about?” instead of producing an unsupported universal tier list.
What release-build Kai quests use the Combat Arena?
A post-launch trophy guide documents at least two Kai-related uses of the arena. One early side quest sends the player into the Combat Arena to survive a sequence of waves. A later quest chain reportedly asks for a specific combat objective involving deflected attacks in the same arena. These details are useful for players trying to understand why the practice area remains relevant after the first introduction.
We deliberately do not turn that third-party guide into an “official quest database.” Localized names can differ, and patches can change exact objective values. When your current game gives you a Kai quest, use the on-screen objective as the primary source and treat this guide as route context.
Can you test Blessings in the Training Ground?
The final-demo description says the Training Ground is for testing builds, weapons and abilities, but the public sources reviewed here do not justify claiming that every randomized Gods of Death Blessing can be freely selected from a practice menu in the released build. Blessings are officially described as randomized powers obtained during normal runs.
For that reason, this page does not invent a Blessing selector, drop table or training-only Blessing system. Use the Blessings Hub and Blessing Database for current evidence about the run-specific system.
Does Training Ground give materials, Souls or permanent rewards?
We do not publish a fixed Training Ground reward table because the current public evidence used here does not establish one. The Combat Arena clearly matters for side-quest objectives in player-tested release documentation, but that is different from proving a universal material payout, Soul Rune farming rate or permanent reward loop.
If you are farming progression resources, use systems whose reward behavior is actually documented in the current game. Avoid choosing the Training Ground solely because an old preview or forum post implies a reward that may have changed.
Why should you re-test after patches?
Practice results are version-sensitive. The v1.0.20260824 update changed ranged combinations, ranged cooldowns and the Anubis Blessing, while also adjusting gear values. The v1.0.20260829 update changed movement obstacles and melee attack telegraphing/tracking. Those are exactly the kinds of changes that can make an old comfortable timing feel different.
If a future Axe revamp or larger Blessing expansion actually ships, that will be another reason to revisit the arena. The developers have discussed those areas as future design exploration, but they should not be described as released changes until a later patch confirms them.
Training Ground FAQ
Is Training Ground the same as Trial Ground?
No. Training Ground is the public demo-era name for Kai's practice feature, while Trial Ground is the released run structure explicitly named by achievements such as The Untouchable and In Their Final Forms.
Why does a release guide call it the Combat Arena?
A current player-tested trophy guide describes the Kai-adjacent release area as a Combat Arena. This may reflect the final UI or a translated/localized name. We preserve both terms because the public sources do not establish one universal English label across every version.
Who unlocks the Training Ground?
Kai is the character directly associated with the feature in the final-demo introduction, and post-launch quest documentation continues to place the Combat Arena beside Kai.
Can Training Ground complete The Untouchable?
No evidence used here supports that. The achievement explicitly requires a Trial Ground Run without taking damage.
Can I use the arena to test a new weapon?
Yes as a practice goal: the final-demo introduction specifically described the Kai-linked Training Ground as a place to test builds, weapons and abilities.
